Itch. Itch.
Scratch. Scratch.
Wintertime. Dry air. Doggies.
Some dog breeds are susceptible to dry skin and itching. German Shepherds are one of those breeds.
I sweep up a new poodle every day in GSD dog hair. There's got to be a solution.
At least, I'm hoping so. I read on the Interwebs that flax seed oil is good for itchy dogs.
Therefore and hence, I came up with a dog cookie recipe that includes flax seed oil (which you can purchase at any reputable --or disreputable I suppose -- just kidding -- drugstore or health food chain.)
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups white flour
2 Tbs. oatmeal
1 tsp salt
2 Tbs. brown sugar
2 Tbs. flax seed oil
2/3 cup vegetable/canola/olive oil
1 egg
1/3 cup powdered dry milk
1 cup water
Directions
1. Combine all ingredients to form a stiff dough.
2. Add more water or flour as needed.
3. Roll dough to 1/2" inch thickness on greased cookie sheet.
4. Use cookie cutters or simply score dough with knife to create 1" X 2" cookies.
5. Bake at 375 F for 30 minutes on middle oven rack.
6. Turn off oven and let cookies cool.
Cookies should be very hard after cooling.
I generally break each cookie in half -- each dog receives 1/2 cookie a few times per day (they are spoiled.)

we will have to try this for dexterdog!
ReplyDeleteI myself eat a couple heapful tablespoons of cold pressed flaxseed daily on my fruit, where I buy it at a disreputable place...keeps me happy day in and day out LOL
You are a good moma to your doggies, making them homemade treats :)
ReplyDeleteOh when I first saw the pic I was getting hungry but I think maybe humans could enjoy this too:) B
ReplyDeleteSo how do they taste? Cause I'm guessing you've sampled - I would ;-)
ReplyDeleteUmm, nope -- I did not try them! ;)
DeleteI will have to pass that on to my Mom her dog has itchy skin
ReplyDeleteLucky pups!
ReplyDeleteWe have itchy winter dogs, too.
ReplyDeleteI use a fish oil called Ascenta Nutrasea...it's amazing, but the cost is rough!
Oh those look good ! Have a great Monday
ReplyDeleteWe have an Aussie, also prone to dry skin, so I'm thinking I should add some flax seed oil to her food. So did you try the cookies?
ReplyDeletei'm pinning these to ozzy's board! and i hear you on the dog hair, ozzy does the same...let me know when you find something that works...i've been going through with the shop vac lol
ReplyDeleteLucky dogs :) They look nummy!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good mom you are, to make homemade treats for your dogs! They look good for humans, too!
ReplyDeleteYUM you are so good to your critters! Alas I have a bunch that are allergic to flax but I might just try them with a different oil! Should be baking for my dogs instead of for me! LOL
ReplyDeleteI've just got to say that I am in awe of you. I barely feed the humans in my charge (ok, I exaggerate a bit), much less make treats for my 4 legged critters from scratch! You rock!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteWOW what a good doggie mom you are...I know your dogs enjoyed the biscuits but come on now...did you taste? We all want to know........
ReplyDeletei hope they respond well to it!
ReplyDeleteThe problem here is the Monkeys tend to over-treat the dogs, or simply eat the homemade dog biscuits themselves! I like to use peanut butter and garlic powder in the ones I make. I will have to grind up some flax seed and see if that helps.
ReplyDeleteOld Dog gets a fish oil pill daily, which seems to help some with his arthritis.
Sounds utterly delicious!
ReplyDeleteI thought they were cookies for us......hehe
ReplyDeleteI am going to try these. I make most of my dog's treats. I have a wonderful recipe for muffins that they just love!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe. My Max does have itchy dry skin. We give him a fish oil capsule twice a day and I think that helps, but I bet he'd love these more!
ReplyDeleteYou do have some spoiled dogs! I love it :)
ReplyDeletePretty healthy treat for those pups.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! B vitamins are also great for dog's skin and for prevention of 'hot spots'.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing your recipe. These sound way more healthy than the milk bones our spoiled dog gets!!
ReplyDeleteLucky pups! :)
ReplyDeleteHave a happy day, Nancy!
Let us know how they work. Our dog gets itchy too. I thought it might be allergies, never thought about it being dry skin here in the DESERT! Duh!! ;)
ReplyDeleteBet the dogs love 'em!
ReplyDeleteThey look good. If you would call them something like Heart Healthy Nuggets instead of Dog Biscuits, maybe I would try them. :)
ReplyDeleteAn Arkies Musings
sure hope this works for your sweet dogs...
ReplyDeleteHow sweet, I imagine the dogs love them.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a little cheese to go with them.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought...hmmmm, no sugar...and then I saw brown sugar. Bet they could be people biscuits. I know a couple of people with dry skin. They're not shedding but they are itchy. Now this is something my D-I-L might try for their dogs but I know at least one child would get into them.
ReplyDeleteWoof! Woof! Flax seed oil is such a great ingredient. I co-host a Tasty Tuesday blog hop. Please add this post/url to the hop. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
ReplyDeleteokay, that means happy doggies and a good mum!
