"What do you want for Valentine's Day?"
Okay, I must admit, this question was not asked.
Nor do I expect it to be.
We don't generally participate in
holidays that have become
overly-commercialized.
Because
1. We don't really need anything you would
find in the Valentine's Day aisle at
Wally World,
2. A simple hug and kiss
will do just fine on any given day.
A holiday is not needed to express our gratefulness
for all that we have.
Including each other.
However...
We did find ourselves looking through
the McMurray Hatchery catalog the other day.
Mostly because our chicken stock
has dwindled to around 4 hens
has dwindled to around 4 hens
and one rooster.
Should we order some chicks this year?
Heck yeah.
So I went online and ordered 25 chicks
which should arrive the week of
February 18.
Ornamental Layers --
A collection of rare and fancy pullets (females.)
I won't know what I'll have
until they arrive
and maybe
not even then.
I'll likely have to wait until they mature.
Bantams? Polish Crested?
Cochins, Campines, Red Caps?
Blue Andalusians, Silver Spangled Hamburgs, Dark Cornish,
Speckled Sussex, Light Brahmas, Red Leghorns,
Mottled Houdans, Partridge and Columbian Rocks,
Silver Laced and Columbian Wyandottes, Turkens?
A gift that keeps on giving.
So, if you are thinking of sending me a
Valentine this year...
Thank you, but
I'd rather have chickens.
I'd rather have chickens.

ReplyDeleteEveryday Love is SO much better than Hallmark Holiday love substitutes.
ReplyDeleteYou have brought a big smile to my face as I read about a woman wanting chickens for Valentine's Day. I don't recognize most of the names you've listed but I hope your gift brings you the pleasure you are anticipating. Such a useful gift too.

I love chickens and roosters. We have a few ducks and only one goose right now. Sadly we have lost all of our fowl to predators in the last two years. We will restock soon. Your chickens are just lovely!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend! :-)

ReplyDeleteChicks sound like a perfectly wonderful gift for Valentine's Day!! I like the idea of getting an "assortment." I might do that next time just so I can tell them apart! LOL!!
ReplyDeletetruly, lovely.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too into holidays like Valentines day, so chickens sound pretty awesome to me. Can't wait to see the photos!
ReplyDeleteI wish that I could chickens where I live but zoning laws prevent it. Enjoy your chicks!
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean you ordered a "variety" of chicks? I think it would be great fun to see what they turn out to be. And I think it sounds like a great gift for Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteYour chickens are just fantastic.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
Oh I think that is the perfect gift. Oh I think # 2 is perfect. That did not come out right. Drat you know what I mean:) :)
ReplyDeleteI would like a little chocolate though perhaps a chocolate chicken.
Question???? do you need the link to the actual post or just my blog url?
send me an email I am on my way out for the night yeah dinner out I can't believe it I will pretend it is Valentines not MIL birthday:)
xxoo Hugs B
Question.
ReplyDeleteI emailed my information on February 4th: name, blog url, added your button to my blog etc for the Valentine's Boost your blog event...
Yet Have Not received any confirmation .... I've no idea if you got it or not.
Should I have gotten a confirmation or will everything just be posted on your blog on the 14th?
I'm with you, the over-commercialism of most (if not all) holidays has taken the joy out of them. Especially when cards (even mediocre ones) are $4-6... for a card??? And I dare say that they'll just get thrown in the trash... I feel the same way about wrapping paper. My mom used to buy white dish towels and use them to wrap gifts, because they could be used instead of thrown away... you'll have to give us an update post later on about your new girls... Thank you for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #69!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo! Lovely hens!
ReplyDeleteI would think they would be more for Easter but hey it's a gift that keeps on giving. After my recent internet problems I will just go for it and throw it out to the universe, I want an iPad with wifi for those times that I need a back up. I think Cupid will have a hard time farting one of those out instead of a little hearts, what do you think?
ReplyDeleteP.S love the new banner!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I've been wanting to get chicks again. I couldn't think of a better Valentines gift :)
ReplyDeleteI love you for wanting and keeping chickens because I don't but I do love the eggs. The young folks up the road have chickens and I buy eggs from them...love supporting them!
ReplyDeleteLove this post...love those chickens! This is so timely...I have 3 photos I'm posting on tumblr of eggs...LOL. Valentine's Day...no big deal, I may wear red to work but that will be the extent of it. Even when I was dating someone, it wasn't a big deal...all this due to Mr. Wrong. Yep, I'd rather have chickens too!
ReplyDeleteChickens sound like a perfect Valentine's Day gift! Can't wait to see pictures.
ReplyDeletexo
Definitely!
ReplyDeleteA simple hug and kiss will do just fine on any given day. Amen to that.
Have a blessed Sunday!
Great shot! Chickens are great. :-)
ReplyDeleteNo room for Chickens here in the city. But if we did I would love them. And I think they are the perfect Valentine day gift. We usually buy a couple of lobster tails and cook a yummy dinner at home.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the photos of when you get your chicks..
Hugs~
i like silkies and guinea fowl
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture you show :) Hanne Bente
ReplyDeleteI love that line, "Thank You, but I'd rather have chickens"!!! Awesome. When I was young we had lots of chickens. One of my chores was to feed them and gather the eggs. I never minded feeding them, but getting the eggs was a chore at times when they hens didn't want to leave the nest.
ReplyDeleteNow that is awesome! Enjoy your new chicks! I have no one to valentine with so I sort of scoff it off, while secretly really wanting someone to do it with!
ReplyDeleteI read this post to my husband because we are they same way :) He had me look at the catalog immediately! Question: Do the different breeds get along in the coop? We had about three different varieties one time and the Buff Orpingtons really did NOT like the others and picked at them all the time.
ReplyDeleteAnne -- I've found that if the chicks are raised together, they usually get along fine when they mature. It's when you introduce a newbie or newbies into the flock, problems can arise. I usually keep the chicks separate and enclosed inside until they are able to go outside safely, then I keep them fenced off from the adults so they can see each other and get used to each other before everyone is put together. Then, I watch and see if all is well. :)
ReplyDeleteWe only have one old girl left and we wouldn't put her in with the new chicks so I think we are going to place an order in the next few weeks! Thanks for posting :)
Deleteyour chickens are just beautiful!!
ReplyDeletexx
Me too :) But I think I have too many already. Doesn't mean I don't want more! Especially if they lay green and blue eggs. Have fun with your little chickies!
ReplyDeleteOhh... I love getting the assortments! And I agree- chickens are the perfect Valentine's Day Gift! :)
ReplyDeleteThese are the gifts that just keep on giving...and giving...and giving. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to follow along on this adventure with you here Nancy!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea there were so many varieties. Can't wait to see what you get!
ReplyDeleteNow that's what I'm talking about! Nothing says I love you more than a gift of baby chicks! Can't wait to see what you end up with. How exciting!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! Now chickens are my idea of a gift for any occasion. Not that I need any more chickens, but a few more ( not roosters please) are always welcome. You are so right, chickens, the gift that keeps on giving.
