A Rural Journal: {Balancing Act}

My friend Madge Bloom, who authors the blog A View From Right Here
wrote a post yesterday about
when several life situations
converging all at once --
cause personal upheaval --
creating a new normal.

I advised Madge in my comment,
it was if she knew
how I was feeling.

I can appreciate the dragonfly
perched on intertwining bands of barbed wire --
eager to hold on to what is familiar
amidst an environment
of competing, previously unknown elements.

  1. That is very profound. Not sure if I will see a dragonfly the same after reading this.
    Many blessings for your day,

  5. I have entered a realm of wanting to depart from 'normal' and venture into something (hopefully) more. But like the dragonfly on the barbwire fence, I tend to cling tight for fear that beyond 'normal' is not greener grass.

Wishing you and Madge a delightfully normal and happy Sunday.

  7. A superb image. Change in life can be so difficult. Especially when preceded by chaos.

  8. You know Nancy, I am learning that life is a balancing act from the moment we start breathing. Most times we learn and find the balance. Other times we hang on for dear life, and get back up on the 'wire'. Human resilience is an amazing thing.
Your dragonfly teaches us what to do.....hang on, wait, things will get better.

  9. I hear you. Going through some of that here too. It can be scary. Sometimes you have to just ride the wave and hope that good things come with the change.

  10. What a beautiful and hard to capture shot! I also love the sentiment. I know from my experience that sometimes things have to fall apart before they can be rebuilt the right way. Best wishes to you!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. :)

  15. I miss chasing those dragonflies with a camera. This reminded me of a shot i took of a grasshopper placed on the barbs by a shrike last May.

  17. Such a beautiful photo. I know how this feels as well. It's hard to get used to change, especially when things happen all at once and nothing feels familiar anymore.

  20. Hanging on by our fingernails we often do... just one second more. I'm down there on the other end of that branch, in case you were wondering, just a-sitting there beside you. xo

  21. ooops, was concentrated on the words and the cute dragonflies. Didn't see it's a wire, not a branch. ;)

  23. Life is always about adjusting our balance, I think. Not thinking too much about past or future sometimes helps me cope. Just like the dragonfly...

  24. if everything is viewed as a learning opportunity, then there are no failures.

yesterday we were helping the daughter and her husband into a new apartment. Her and I went to target to shop for cleaning supplies. As we were walking down one of the aisles, I mentioned to her how nice it was that we didnt need a male to drive us/accompany us nor did we need to cover ourselves head to toe per law (Saudi Arabia)to be there, even though we too live in one of the richest countries...

that in itself should remind us that we are the lucky ones - and we shouldnt waste our ability to choose to live, esp. when there are those who have no choice...

but then sometimes we are like the caged wild animal with the gate open to encourage us to go -and we end up too frighten to move...

But today I choose to live.

  25. What is bad is sometimes I wonder if like will ever be normal again...seems like there is always something to be concerned about. Sometimes so on edge it is hard to bare.

  26. Lots of us in the same boat..the night only lasts so long and the morning comes....

  27. The darkest hour is just before dawn. I remember that line from the Laura Ingalls Wilder book Little House on the Prairie. It's true. Literally and figuratively. I hope things right themselves soon for you. Life is challenging, that's for sure..
