My husband found this recipe book at a thrift store some years ago and brought it home. He's thoughtful like that.
I just love the retro 50's images, don't you?
Can you imagine putting on a dress, matching apron and heels to host a breakfast or brunch at home?
Oh, and the trays with little teacups. Too cute.
It's a lost art.
Entertaining.
The Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book.
The index pages are basically trashed. But I know that means this recipe book was used.
Alot.
I was searching for a cinnamon roll recipe Sunday morning. And I found the perfect one.
In this recipe book.
Because what says love like a cinnamon roll recipe from the 1950s?
And no, I didn't put on a dress, apron or heels to give one to the hubs while he watched the Encore Westerns Channel Sunday morning.
Although he would have been so into that.
Do you have a vintage go-to recipe? Please share!

I received that book as a gift in 1971 and while it's not from the 50's, it's still pretty old.
ReplyDeleteUnless I'm out to eat, I'm going to be wearing the most comfortably loose items I have and no bra. I don't even wear heels when I get (semi) dressed up!
A 1962 Fleishman Treasury of Yeast Baking is my go to bread cookbook, and a 1958 Good Housekeeping Party Pie book has some hidden gems. Both I found in a box of junk at a garage sale for free... score!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to find an old cookbook and do a delicious recipe from it, Nancy.
ReplyDeleteI just read about Leontien's passing this month and was so sad to hear about that. She was such a young and vibrant woman with a lovely and loving husband.
All my thoughts go to her family. These will be hard days for them.
I do love the illustrations - eye candy!
ReplyDeleteThe old ones are the best. You're next to me on the Domestically Divine blog hop so I thought I'd come and say hello, from the UK! Following you now - let me know if you would ever like to guest post for me at Mumtopia.
ReplyDeleteSorry, Nancy, but you're not getting off that easy. I want to see you in the dress and heels. We once saw you in your barn boots, so why not dressed as Betty Crocker? :) I'm waiting...
ReplyDeleteI was just running to find my pearls:) Yummy. B
ReplyDeleteMy mom had this book when I was growing up - I think hers might have been from the 70's though, and it was the first cookbook I got after I was married (although I have a much newer edition!), I love it!
ReplyDeleteI have The Butterick Book of Recipes and Household Tips, copyright 1927. and the BH&G New Cookbook like yours. I love these old cookbooks, and if they are worn and stained, must be a good one! I have another that I bought at an estate sale, don't know the name of it becuase the cover is gone, but it was in pieces, and is a wonderful book!! Yes, entertaining was an art form then. Love looking at these old books and getting a glimpse of life then! Enjoyed this post very much!!!!
ReplyDeleteNancy - not only do I have recipes - I have oodles of them. I inherited my mom's, my grandmother's and my great-grandmother's recipes (and books). In fact, I have that very Better Homes & Gardens. The books I love, but also the countless hand-written ones my elders painfully jotted down and probably made. I try not to look at those because the 50s and 60s, 70s and 80s are why I'm on a treadmill every*single*day.
ReplyDeletepS - got the apron too (it would freak my husband if I donned heels, dress and apron). and you are so right - the art of entertaining has been lost.
Times have sure changed... I love aprons...
ReplyDeleteMy husband would check me into a hospital if I showed up in heels and an apron in the kitchen...he would probably actually be a little scared ;) I do have a Beginner's Cookbook that someone gave me when we first got married. It is a Better Homes and Garden's smaller edition book with lots of pictures and step by step recipes. It even has pages with photos of labeled utensils. The chili recipe in that cookbook is actually the base recipe for the chili I still cook today. Great memories :)
ReplyDeleteI have my grandmothers old cookbook and I love it.... she was an incredible cook - so much of her own handwriting is in there too... She used to dress exactly like that.
ReplyDeleteNot me! Jeans and T-shirt unless I absolutely have to do something different when we go out :-)
Notice the LOOOONG necks on those women?
I can practically taste that delicious looking cinnamon roll... yum!
I recently mentioned on (one of my Irish Garden posts) the Best Brownie Recipe ever, from the ever famous, red checkered, Better Homes and Gardens cook book. My book has been used by me for fifty plus years. I happy to be Vintage and still making recipes from this book and others . . . although not in heels and a dress.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Nancy . . .
Reminds me of my Leave it to Beaver days! June always had her pearls on! Not in a million years for this girl! Loved that you found the roll recipe! Fun post Nancy!
ReplyDeletehehe nancy, this really made me smile!! and no heels for shane, shame on you!! i am going to post my cinnamon roll picture from yesterday on facebook, mine came from a can & i did not wear heels either!! shame on me!!
ReplyDeletei love my grandmother's old cookbook
ReplyDelete....everything tastes like history
and wildly stirs my imagination:)
your cinnamon bun looks amazing.
-Jennifer
My mom had that cookbook. I don't know what ever happened to it. I don't cook at all so I wouldn't have kept it.
ReplyDeleteI recognize that book from my childhood..my mom used it RELIGIOUSLY!
ReplyDeleteThat book has certainly been used a lot! My mother teaches me cooking and I try to take it all in. We have, till date never used a cook book!
ReplyDeleteThat looks sooooooo Yummy!
ReplyDeleteThat cinnamon roll looks so yummy!
ReplyDeleteOh sure, Nancy. I know you dress up like that and serve cinnamon rolls. I do too!
ReplyDeleteMy Mom has the same Better Homes and Gardens cookbook :) I used that all through my childhood!
ReplyDeleteLOL...you dress like that and he would probably forget about the western channel. I have an old Betty Crocker cookbook that is my go to for recipes. I just love it and the pages are falling out also.
ReplyDeleteYum, I'd like a bite of your cinnamon roll, please! ;)
ReplyDeleteI didn't have one in 10+ years, and in my opinion cinnamon rolls are one of the best sweets in the USA. I must try them at home, thanks for the recipe.
My dad has TONS of recipe-books, from the 1800 till today. All in Italian, tho'.
xo
so cute. i have that betty crocker cookbook, too (or one like it). i used it for a recipe or two about 25+ yrs ago. cannot even remember what i might have cooked from it. no idea... still have it though.
ReplyDeleteshepherd's pie, i think, actually.
ReplyDeleteI love vintage recipe books, and Church and Community collections too! My favorite though, is a family recipe book my mother-in-law put together with all the family receipes her mother had in her collection. They are wonderful, rich and tasty.
ReplyDeleteEntertaining in this century has a much warmer feel to it... everyone gathered in a large kitchen while the hostess and her husband share the cooking responsibilities and everyone in comfortable clothes. In that respect I am glad that the old art of entertaining has fallen to the wayside.
ReplyDeleteThat cookbook looks familiar to me. I don't have one but I'm thinking somewhere in my childhood I saw it in someone's kitchen. Great looking cinnamon roll!!! YUMMO!
That does look absolutely divine!
ReplyDeleteeverything but the heels...I'd fall of 'em! there are several vintage cookbooks in my collection. come to think of it, most of 'em are vintage. I'll drag a couple of out see but, today, I'm making strawberry cookies for the VFD meeting tonight.
ReplyDeleteI'm wtih TexWisGirl...love shepherd's pie!
This brought back memories of my mom and grandma wearing dresses and aprons! Not for this gal. No heals either. I don't cook much anymore but I do have a few recipes I use from way back then.
ReplyDeleteThat looks utterly delicious!
ReplyDeleteI have the 1968 edition of this cookbook, so it has photo illustrations instead. But I also have a 1951 Fanny Farmer Cookbook that I took to a tiny island in Micronesia in the early-70's. Not too many ingredients available there, though!
ReplyDeleteMMMMM that roll looks good.We were just talking about favorite family food and porcupine balls came up.
ReplyDeleteI have that Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, plus a few others I like that I got from my grandmother.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the 50's - dresses grew old fast!
ReplyDeleteI do love vintage recipes as well. I totally agree that nothing says love like a cinnamon roll from the 50s! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find. My mom has that book, by the way. And the cinnamon roll looks absolutely delish.
ReplyDeleteMy sister gave me hers, it was well used, the dear even wrote comments if something was good or not on some of the recipes. It's a treasure in more ways than one!
ReplyDeleteYour cinnamon roll looks fabulous! YUM!
ReplyDeleteMy BHG cookbook is from 1976 and I still use it. Someone actually gave me a newer version for Christmas a couple of years ago and I took it to the used book store because I prefer my older one! ;)
There is nothing like the smell of cinnamon rolls baking! Those look fantastic. Nice to have a guy who brings you vintage cookbooks!
ReplyDeleteHow cool! I think my mom had this too! Those look DELISH :)
ReplyDeleteCan you say YUM.. I have a really old BH&G cook book as well. And Yes I still love some of the recipes from it.. My favorite is the meatloaf. Hummm.. Maybe I should look for and see if there is a recipe for Cinnamon Rolls..
ReplyDeleteHugs~
Wow, I have this book, it was my mom's from 1954 which was a wedding present. I still make the Twice Cooked Divinity from it.
ReplyDeleteI have a 1930s cookbook that was my mom's... the only one she had actually. And I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love these images from this old cookbook. I have my mother's recipe book that she and my sister wrote their favourites in. It is an interesting history really of food and diets. As for a favourite older recipe I like my mil's molasses cookies. :)
ReplyDeleteTonight I whipped up some breakfast for supper in a pair of pj pants, slippers, and a t-shirt. I am so glamorous like that :) Cannot imagine cooking/entertaining in heels and a dress.
ReplyDeleteI love vintage graphics. Nice shot.
ReplyDeleteI love the pic you posted too. I have a vintage Betty Crocker cookbook and love the meatloaf recipe in it. Soooo many comfort food recipes in it. :) I'll have to try this cinnamon roll recipe. My mouth is watering, and i'm craving cinnamon and frosting now...
ReplyDeleteI have that cookbook! It rocks. The pie crust recipe is my mainstay and I have tried about every pie in that book! You have a winner. Your husband is a good picker outer:)
ReplyDeleteI wish I did!
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
that cinnamon roll looks scrumptious!
ReplyDeletei want one!
xx
I have that red and white checked cook book and it is my 'go-to' cook book. There are some tried and true recipes in there that I would not deviate from and then there are some I would never think of tackling. As far as entertaining goes, you are correct - it is a lost art. The last time I actually entertained was a Christmas party about 8 years ago. I was dating someone and we 'hosted' about 20 people...it was the most fun and probably the best time I had had in ages. Today, I don't know if I'd have the stamina but I know it would probably take me at least 2 months to plan and who has the time! Now, when many people entertain, they order take out...well, at least the young onces do...Yikes! And they don't know what an apron is!
ReplyDeleteThat. is awesome. What a fun find!!
ReplyDeleteI have a cookbook with that same cover that I bought in 1961 when I was a bride. So long ago! It has a shortcake recipe that I used last week. Good recipes. Good year, actually. :)
