A Rural Journal: {More snow and cold on the way!}

The past few days have been mild -- 40s F during the day.

And it's soupy around the farmyard.

That is one lone fact I don't like about living here.

The mud and muck when the snow melts.

You better have yourself a good pair of rubber boots.

It's hard to tell where the mud starts and the goose p**p ends.

Ewww.

So, the one good thing about more snow and cold temps headed our way -- the mud and muck will freeze and be covered by clean, white snow.

An illusion, but one I gladly look forward to nonetheless.

Out of sight, out of mind as they say.

Until it warms up again. Like it's supposed to this weekend.

Then it's back to slogging.

Which sounds like, and really should be considered, an Olympic sport.

  1. We've got the mud, but rarely the beauty of(or temps for) snow. Just told hubby the other day that I need me some mud boots.

  2. I hate mud, but I love snow... Myself, my daughter and our dog love playing, rolling, digging in snow - and we seldom have such an opportunity. It is so warm now, does not feel like normal winter at all...

The photo is beautiful. I am almost ready to print out the whole blog of yours, with all the awesome photos and wonderful texts, and put on my walls at home.

  3. I see what you mean. That's a good term, but the photo is beautiful!

  4. We don't see much snow here, when we do, it's an 'event'.
    Plenty of mud though.

  11. Morning Nancy I love that shot. It is muddy and raining here this morning but I am OK I have my Cadillac Boots they are no longer pretty pink more of a muddy brown:)
I am not sure if we are going to get more snow or not. I love clean white snow. Hug B

  12. Growing up in North Dakota, I always hated when the snow started to melt. It was muddy and the snow looked dirty. I love the pristine, white of snow.

  13. Agreed. Our driveway is a mud pit. And the floors I scrubbed by hand? Sigh.

  14. i love the cold and the snow. mud poses a problem for my footwear of choice ;)))

is this a picture of your farm?? it's beautiful!!

  15. I have lived places where the spring thaw meant a big mud-fest! the picture is lovely and serene though.

  16. My goodness! What a beautiful scence! Love the snow! It sounds liked it is helpful for covering up the muck too. :)

  17. we're having the very same weather here.. and the barnyard is like walking through soup, good analogy! ...

LOVE that image, it's like a watercolor...

  18. And would you go for the gold medal in slogging? :)
    Great photo!

  20. Yes, we definitely have a "mud" season up here in Maine. It is known as spring in other parts of the country :-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Our spring is mud season (just like in Maine, Heather above) but it won't be for a while even though we're getting rain today and tomorrow. Then it's going to flash freeze again which could make things interesting. I think "slogging" would make an interesting sport and one that I could possibly take part in with a pair of high gum boots. Being the non athlete that I am I think I could actually slog through mud pretty good. Great exercise for the legs too. :)

  22. It should be an Olympic sport, the only requirement is you have to be carrying multiple things, while wearing boot that have shoe laces that come untied. I'd like to see an Olympian try that!

  23. That is a wonderful photo. And I agree with you about the slogging through the mud (goose "leftovers," too?) - blech.

  24. I really like the farm photo Nancy! Nice job!
I am sure there would be plenty of people who were experts at 'slogging'!! lol

  25. Very pretty photo, Nancy. I thought it was you farm until I read your reply to Marme Purl.
I always hated the muck and mud when I lived on the farm. Once when my daughters were very young, one got stuck in the mud and couldn't get out. I had to get a board to walk out to get her.

  26. Slogging... yes, definitely, I can see that! Great shot!

  27. I really like what you've done with this photo. It looks like a painting. We have had our share of slogging this year when the rains went on and on during December. I'm getting good use out of my Bogs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes this sounds familiar our 2 acre garden is just the same, boggy boggy. I love the place in the Spring and Summer but Winter rainy weather no thanks. Great Shot!
    Sheila :)

  29. It felt like summer here the past couple of days, but now it's dropped way down into the 60's during the day. I don't think I could deal with all that slogging!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Beautiful photo by the way!!

  31. the place we lived before had 'black gumbo' clay - either hard as a rock or boot-sucking mud. it was dreadful when it was like that - for the horses, for humans. here, we have a sandier mix. still get mud, but at least it's sandy mud. :)

  32. Excellent image - the sky almost looks cartoonized!

  33. What a lovely shot. We're certainly on the bottom of the roller coaster again. I wish we'd just find a happy temperature and stay there for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Everything has a good and bad side, I guess. I always dread when snow melts, too.

    Love the shot at top!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah, I hear you on the mud - although we don't live on a farm, our horse does.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can understand not liking all the slogging. We're so dry here, though, I'd welcome a few muddy days.
I think we got some of your cold. From 80s yesterday, to low 60s today.

Love the shot of the snowy farm.

  37. We got pounded last night, been out playing in it with the sled.

  38. Here in Western Arkansas it is a cold day with a few spits of snow and sleet. It is quite a shock after the 70 degrees with heavy rain and storms yesterday.

  39. Haha, I know what you mean! It's very sloppy here too. I always have to wonder if I have mud or chicken poop on me. Smelling is unfortunately the only way to tell!

    ReplyDelete
  40. We too are up to our knees in mud from the horses and the mild temps. Waiting for sever thunderstorms to roll through tonight :/ Hope they aren't too bad.

  41. We are in a bit of "soupy" right this very minute but predictions are warning more of the "snowy" on the way.
This has been the course of the past week . . .
    Green
    Losing the green
    Kind of white
    Very white
    Very, very, very white
    Snow bound
    Rain
    Spring
    Flood
    Winter
    Storm predicted
    Unbelievable

  42. At least they make lost of cute rubber boots these days! :D

    ReplyDelete
  43. That another reason I don't like it here in the desert.. We don't get to slogg.. LOL.. We float sometimes during a flash flood but never slogg..

    Hugs~

  44. Slogg....perfect name. Thank goodness Toby is a small dog, I just pick him up and carry him right to the sink. Love that pic with that gorgeous blue sky.

  45. We've been a little slushy here too and then yesterday it snowed for a good part of the day and now we're back to sliding on ice, well on the side streets. Should warm up again tomorrow. I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mud season. Muck season! Yuck. I agree. Snow is better.. for awhile anyway. We have lots of mud here because of all the winter rain, etc. It makes things quite... soggy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Today I think it reached into the 60s here in central NJ and most of us are complaining. Allergies are active and the up and down temps are driving everyone crazy. Sitting in an office all day, it's hard to get a handle on the weather...I keep an AccuWeather window on my desktop to keep me linked to the 'real' world. I wish I could take some of your snow...we are expecting heavy rain and strong winds overnight and into tomorrow. I'm really ready to slogg through some snow!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Beautiful photo! Try to stay warm!

    ReplyDelete
  49. LOL... an Olympic sport... lol

Just pray the boot stays on and isn't sucked into soggy mess.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ah yes, it's a triathlon; mud slugging, ice skating and water obstacle course here!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Great wintery scene! :)
I hear ya' on the mud, no fun at ALL! It gets really slick in the goat pen when it's muddy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. LOVE this photo of yours!!
    You make me laugh. :)

  53. That is a beautiful scene. I don't miss those muddy days.
