The American Goldfinches returned to the feeders as the temperatures plummeted this weekend.
I'm not quite sure where they hang out the rest of the time -- but it was wonderful to see them swarming the homemade sunflower seed feeders in large numbers (along with one lone house finch, cardinals, woodpeckers, juncos, sparrows, nuthatch and blue jays.)
The males are starting to reveal their familiar vivid yellow and black plumage. This little one had a few black polka dots on his forehead, the beginnings of a jet black cap he will proudly wear throughout the spring and summer months.
We are so fortunate to have these pretty jewels in our area to view and enjoy. Do you have a favorite feeder bird?

chickadee. have a great monday. ( :
ReplyDeleteI wish we had those. We have lots of hummingbirds here. They inhabited a large tree out in front of my house until it had to be cut down because of the danger it had become. Since then, I haven't seen many. They're cute little guys. I'd love to get a picture of one in flight.
ReplyDeleteSuch a splash of color in the white cold winter!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat to see such a handsome fellow
ReplyDeleteI rarely see Goldfinches, but when I do it's a joy.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this shot so cute. Morning Nancy,
ReplyDeleteI do not have bird feeder but it would be a squirrel feeder if you know what I mean we are overrun:)
I love the Chick a Dees. B
Beautiful little bird Nancy, and what a beautiful shot this is! Love it! What a sunny way to start the day
ReplyDeleteLovely photo . The birds are in a feeding frenzy here as we are to be in a deep freezing with in a day or two temps are dropping down to -25°C so we are just cozying up and hunkering down ! Stay warm and have a good day !
ReplyDeleteA sweet photo of the little goldfinch. I love their chattering as they fly across the sky in groups. I think my favourites this winter are the common redpolls. There has been a flock of them at the niger feeder every day. They are so tiny and the male has a rosy breast. It's bitterly cold here too but the sun is shining.
ReplyDeleteThey were hanging out down at our house! Cardinals are my favorites. Year round. Even though they can be bullies.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful capture of this little bird, I love the colours.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty fella! I'm still learning the birds we have here but I'm getting mostly house finches, I believe, and doves. All I know is that a full feeder only lasts about two hours now, lol!
ReplyDeleteI think I enjoy them all . . . they each have their little way about them. If I could stage the feeders near a window where I could capture your kind of photos, I would be a happy gal . . . Perfect photo Nancy!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Nancy. Our trees are attracting cardinals this week and a few grey wrens. Your bright yellow is most welcome today. Visiting from Heather’s blog at No Winter Whining and so glad I did. Happy week.
ReplyDeleteWonderful bird capture. I don't know many by sight, but this is one I do know. Their warm yellow is so cheerful. Cold here too. Maybe I'll see some.
ReplyDeletedangnabit! We've got nothing except plain ole brown birds, and not many of those so far this year. Admittedly I just got a new feeder and feed put out - but I want purty bird pictures. This one is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAs for your question - I do enjoy with the Cardinal family shows up.
Absolutely wonderful photo and lovely little bird, I am pretty sure I have never seen them here before, but I can always wish! Thank you so much for visiting my blog and joining in on our "no winter whining" meme, I look forward to seeing more of your lovely photos! Cheers~
ReplyDeleteI think I love them all and this is a lovely shot!
ReplyDeletewhat a cutie!
ReplyDeleteIt is so cute! Very beautiful in its yellow and black colors.
ReplyDeleteI am not a bird watcher, but I didn't know they changed colors with the season. I learned something on a Monday morning.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Missouri (suburbia) - Our State Bird is a Blue Bird - I've been here years - only seen one - ever - it was right in my own yard . . . it was stunning . . i held my breath
ReplyDeletelove & love,
-g-
We were at minus seven this morning. My feeders are about empty again. At least I know they appreciate it in this weather! Lovely shot!
ReplyDeleteSO pretty! Yes, mine are two, my Chickadees and Bushtits. The Bushtits come in a flock of around twenty birds, they are about half the size of a Chickadee and they are fearless!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, beautiful capture with a touch of color!
ReplyDeleteI don't feed the birds anymore. Love to see them though, flitting through the trees. Tacky is fond of "bird" for dinner.
ReplyDeleteNancy - the goldfinch is my favorite! It has probably been years since I have seen any.
ReplyDeletebeautiful little guys. i'm not sure what i'd consider my favorite at the feeder. i like them all. woodpeckers, titmouses, chickadees, black-bellied whistlers. ;)
ReplyDeletemy goldfinches have been around this winter but they are very gray!! yours here is beautiful!!
ReplyDeletea favorite bird, um NO, i LOVE them all!!
Goldfinches are good forecasters of the seasons. I love it when they change back.
ReplyDeleteWe get the goldfinches here too, I think they are lovely...for birds.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful jewels. I don't have a favorite-love them all too! Your photo is beautiful.
ReplyDelete-Lynn
So pretty! I don't know where all the birds have gone. I don't have any coming to my feeders.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty bird... All our coloured birds are LONG gone!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful image. Your nature shots are inspiring.
ReplyDeleteLove the splash of yellow in the winter. You are so good at capturing birds! What settings did you use? You must have so much patience :)
ReplyDeleteI love those little finches. I don't see them in the winter, but did get a hummingbird at the feeder the other day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous shot!
ReplyDeleteI love little yellow finches - they aren't that common around here, but I've found they like the coneflower that's planted around the house.
ReplyDeleteBirdfeeders - my friend gave me one of those clear ones you stick to your house window. It comes with reflective film in an attempt to prevent the house dwellers from scaring off the birds. We've had a cardinal visit and it was totally cool to see him so close. No photo ...yet....
I don't even have a feeder, but that's about to change!
ReplyDeleteIn the grey of winter, a Goldfinch brightens the day. Beautifully captured!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great photo! I love the composition and clarity. I don't have a bird feeder, but lots of birds like to eat any leftover chicken scratch I have lying around :)
ReplyDeleteThe American Goldfinch winters over here. They of course, loose the yellow, molt and become a drab brown to blend with the trees and brush over the winter months. Then, come the onset of Spring they return to that beautiful bright yellow! I adore them!...:)JP
ReplyDeleteIm not really a birdie photographer. but will shoot them if i get chance. That is an excellent capture. Stunning.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sunny little guy! I like watching birds but can't feed in the mountains because of drawing wild animals. Still, I occasionally throw out bits of stale bread that the grey jays immediately take care of.
ReplyDeleteI like the all, but the song birds especially. Can't recall now but the one that sings at O'Dark Thirty is my favorite...what a beautiful voice in the middle of such darkness!
ReplyDeleteThe American Goldfinch is a beauty! It reminds me of our Siskin (http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/s/siskin/index.aspx). :)
ReplyDeleteI like all birds, but I do have a soft spot for the Blue Tit. :)
Happy week, stay warm. xo
What a radiant little bird. I love this photo.
ReplyDeleteI love watching the woodpeckers! The huge ones are comical on the suet feeders and the tiny ones are darling!
ReplyDeleteoh what a pretty little bird...I love the finches in the summertime, don't see them too much in the winter.
ReplyDeleteMy yard is still hosting a motley crew of crows. I prefer anything else...anything. :)
ReplyDeleteNo bird feeders, but I do like watching the hummingbirds and cardinals.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week!
You have such a lovely blog! So glad I found! Thought you would be interested in the giveaway i'm hosting for BluApple @ http://www.domesticsweetheart.blogspot.com/2013/01/bluapple-review-giveaway.htm
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm a new GFC follower :)
My garden is busy in the Mornings after I have filled the Feeders. Blue tits, Robins, Sparrow ,Nuthatch and the Blackbird visit every Morning.
ReplyDeleteLove your variety and didn't know they changed Colour.
Lovely Capture
Have a good Week
I saw a goldfinch for the first time this year too. I thought it might be a little early for them with this cold weather but they do make me smile. This cold weather is killing me, hoping spring comes early this year.
ReplyDeleteI love Goldfinch...and I know that they feed nearby, my dream is to have a flock of them drop by one day, especially if I have my camera with me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining No Winter Whining's first link up.
Jen
We have a family of Mockingbirds near our house, and they are fun to listen to. The neighbors have a pond, so we often hear our Mockingbirds croaking like frogs.
ReplyDeleteAnd sometimes they beep like a car alarm.

What a great capture of a sweet bird. I'd have say my favourite is the woodpecker.
ReplyDeleteHe's a beauty!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteI also don't know where they eat when they're not at my feeders this time of year.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful little bird!
ReplyDeleteLovely photo! My favorite winter feeder bird in our area is the chickadee. And it is indeed cold in our parts of northern Minnesota! -40 to -50 windchills the past couple of nights & mornings. We haven't seen above zero in several days!
ReplyDeleteLovely shot of the Goldie! have a happy day, Nancy!
ReplyDeleteA lovely photo and a perfect post for WBW!
ReplyDeletestunning color!
ReplyDeleteThese guys leave us in the winter.
ReplyDeleteThis is a sweet shot!!!
My favorite feeder birds at the moment are seeing the cardinals and bluejays at the same time. The blues and reds pop against the gray day. :)
Goldfinches are splendid. Splashes of warm gold in the cold. :) I adore them.
ReplyDeleteCute little bird :) Hanne Bente
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet little guy! Love the splash of yellow!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any feeders but have been thinking of getting one just for the photo ops! ;)
My favorite birds around here are actually the ravens, Rowena and Bumblefoot.
superb photo of a great-looking little bird!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo!
ReplyDeleteFavorite feeder bird? Whichever one is there at the moment. :)
I think somewhere between the heat of my day and the cold of yours there is a temperature that birds and people would prefer!
ReplyDeleteNice picture.
Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.
