A Rural Journal: {It's Cold!}

The American Goldfinches returned to the feeders as the temperatures plummeted this weekend.

I'm not quite sure where they hang out the rest of the time -- but it was wonderful to see them swarming the homemade sunflower seed feeders in large numbers (along with one lone house finch, cardinals, woodpeckers, juncos, sparrows, nuthatch and blue jays.)

The males are starting to reveal their familiar vivid yellow and black plumage. This little one had a few black polka dots on his forehead, the beginnings of a jet black cap he will proudly wear throughout the spring and summer months.

We are so fortunate to have these pretty jewels in our area to view and enjoy. Do you have a favorite feeder bird?

  1. I wish we had those. We have lots of hummingbirds here. They inhabited a large tree out in front of my house until it had to be cut down because of the danger it had become. Since then, I haven't seen many. They're cute little guys. I'd love to get a picture of one in flight.

  5. Oh I love this shot so cute. Morning Nancy,

    I love the Chick a Dees. B

  7. Lovely photo . The birds are in a feeding frenzy here as we are to be in a deep freezing with in a day or two temps are dropping down to -25°C so we are just cozying up and hunkering down ! Stay warm and have a good day !

  8. A sweet photo of the little goldfinch. I love their chattering as they fly across the sky in groups. I think my favourites this winter are the common redpolls. There has been a flock of them at the niger feeder every day. They are so tiny and the male has a rosy breast. It's bitterly cold here too but the sun is shining.

  9. They were hanging out down at our house! Cardinals are my favorites. Year round. Even though they can be bullies.

  11. Such a pretty fella! I'm still learning the birds we have here but I'm getting mostly house finches, I believe, and doves. All I know is that a full feeder only lasts about two hours now, lol!

  12. I think I enjoy them all . . . they each have their little way about them. If I could stage the feeders near a window where I could capture your kind of photos, I would be a happy gal . . . Perfect photo Nancy!

  13. Good morning, Nancy. Our trees are attracting cardinals this week and a few grey wrens. Your bright yellow is most welcome today. Visiting from Heather’s blog at No Winter Whining and so glad I did. Happy week.

  14. Wonderful bird capture. I don't know many by sight, but this is one I do know. Their warm yellow is so cheerful. Cold here too. Maybe I'll see some.

  15. dangnabit! We've got nothing except plain ole brown birds, and not many of those so far this year. Admittedly I just got a new feeder and feed put out - but I want purty bird pictures. This one is gorgeous.

As for your question - I do enjoy with the Cardinal family shows up.

  22. SO pretty! Yes, mine are two, my Chickadees and Bushtits. The Bushtits come in a flock of around twenty birds, they are about half the size of a Chickadee and they are fearless!

  35. I love those little finches. I don't see them in the winter, but did get a hummingbird at the feeder the other day.

  36. I love little yellow finches - they aren't that common around here, but I've found they like the coneflower that's planted around the house.
Birdfeeders - my friend gave me one of those clear ones you stick to your house window. It comes with reflective film in an attempt to prevent the house dwellers from scaring off the birds. We've had a cardinal visit and it was totally cool to see him so close. No photo ...yet....

  37. I don't even have a feeder, but that's about to change!

  39. Such a great photo! I love the composition and clarity. I don't have a bird feeder, but lots of birds like to eat any leftover chicken scratch I have lying around :)

  40. The American Goldfinch winters over here. They of course, loose the yellow, molt and become a drab brown to blend with the trees and brush over the winter months. Then, come the onset of Spring they return to that beautiful bright yellow! I adore them!...:)JP

  41. Im not really a birdie photographer. but will shoot them if i get chance. That is an excellent capture. Stunning.

  42. What a sunny little guy! I like watching birds but can't feed in the mountains because of drawing wild animals. Still, I occasionally throw out bits of stale bread that the grey jays immediately take care of.

  43. I like the all, but the song birds especially. Can't recall now but the one that sings at O'Dark Thirty is my favorite...what a beautiful voice in the middle of such darkness!

  52. I saw a goldfinch for the first time this year too. I thought it might be a little early for them with this cold weather but they do make me smile. This cold weather is killing me, hoping spring comes early this year.

  53. I love Goldfinch...and I know that they feed nearby, my dream is to have a flock of them drop by one day, especially if I have my camera with me.

  54. We have a family of Mockingbirds near our house, and they are fun to listen to. The neighbors have a pond, so we often hear our Mockingbirds croaking like frogs.

And sometimes they beep like a car alarm.
