A Rural Journal: {Does not play well with others}

“if you wanted to do something absolutely honest, something true,
it always turned out to be a thing that had to be done alone.”
Richard Yates, Revolutionary Road

: : :

Anything I've ever created (except my children)
that amounted to anything
 I was proud of,
was done solo.

I get totally distracted by the presence of another person
to the point I can't focus on my own ideas.

I believe that's why photographs I attempt
during family gatherings,
quite frankly, blow.

I'm a horrible collaborator.
I tend to happily let others take over
the planning process.

I don't like confrontation.

: : :

But when alone (or with two dogs in tow,)
left to my own thoughts --

inspiration and imagination

flow.

Confidence swells.

I question nothing.

That's when magic happens.

When I feel most satisfied that

I've done the best I can do.

: : :
When it comes to creating,
do you prefer working independently,
barnstorming with others,
or do you benefit from a combination of both?

  1. Good thought! It's very much 'where I am' at the moment! I have always tended to 'put on a face or a persona' and taken part. More and more recently I realise that I am happy most when on my own and left to my own thoughts! I now know that, to live my life, I need times of quiet thoughtfulness. You are not alone in your need, sister! Joan

  2. I´m quite independent but enjoy working together from time to time to get new insights. :-)

  3. A lot would depend on what I'm trying to create and who I would be trying to create it with. As long as they understand I like things my way, we'll do just fine!

  4. I work better independently...no one else can imagine things the same way I do...although I can play well with others if I have to...I generally like to do things solo...that way I'm in charge of what, when, where, and how...and creatively speaking that is important to me...so when I shift mid-stream I don't have to explain myself or make my point to anyone...I can just move along in the direction that I am drawn. Nice topic!!!

  6. I tend to be a collaborator but do sometimes find my creativity is best when I'm alone.

  7. Both, depending on what it is I'm doing.

Beautiful shot of some gorgeous 'critters'!

  11. Such a provoking question. The answer came to me easier than I had expected.
Creativity, in all its forms, is a skill I learned to fill the lonely times. Survival of the mind. It's good thing :)

  14. My best is usually done alone too, but at times I AM a team player by allowing others to take charge. My photography is my domain, though, and resist working with someone else. Sometimes others make me feel guilty about that and I am so GLAD to learn I am not the only one who likes to work solo. :))

  15. As I've gotten "older" I like having my alone time more and more I did not enjoy it in the past now I appreciate spending time with myself

  16. Well you know me - I prefer to be alone. I get my best ideas when I'm out running.

  17. I like alone time. In my work, I'm surrounded by others, 24/7…

So I like quiet time. Time with my man, my dogs. My kids, when they so deign to hang with us.

    But I like alone, too.

  18. Well I must admit I am a bit like you. I write better on my own BUT have to get out there to get there to get those juices flowing. Not necessarily near real people though. :) B

  19. I much prefer quiet and alone with nature. I can't concentrate around a crowd.

  20. This is quite stunning, Nancy! I actually vacilate between the two...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I totally prefer to be independent and do things on my own. Of course, you are totally justified when you get the stunning results above.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mostly independent :) I like to get ideas from others, but find that having people involved tends to distract me too.

  23. i used to work well with others, but always shone more when working independently. these days, a hermit i am...

  24. Hmmm... I've worked in all of these scenarios with success, but I do prefer going with my own ideas creatively when I can

  25. I want to work and/or create alone.. :)
    I am a bit of a loner.
    Nice post Nancy, as always!

  26. solo - I don't question myself, I just do...

  27. Great post ~ love your dogs and wonderful photography ~ Good to 'see you' again ~
Answer to your question ~ I tend to enjoy solitude most of the time to create ~ with photography I can focus around people but most of my photos have very few people in them ^_^

  28. I'm with you - independent - when I'm with people - I don't like to make waves - so whatever they say (even if I don't agree inside)will usually be the course of action

  29. Such a wonderful capture and the quote is beautiful too. Have a lovely day Nancy :)

  30. You know, I really do better by myself. When I'm out, walking, photographing, I love to just think and to be able to wander about where ever I feel like going. It's not that I can't play well with others, but I do require more and more along time to recharge myself. Having said that, I do treasure the strangers that I come across while I'm on an adventure!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love your dogs.
I can't be creative with anyone around, not even Jill (who wants me to scratch her butt - very annoying.)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think I am a mix of both, I appreciation collaboration but I do 99.9% of my creative things alone. xo and thank you for sharing at the hop.

  33. I love the dogs.

As far as working alone or in a group - it depends on the circumstances. Doing something creative (like art or writing something academic) tends to find me working solo. But once in a while, a bit of brainstorming with others really gets my little grey cells working well.

  34. I am quite a bit like you. I don't mind working with others, but when there's a difference of opinion, I would rather do my own thing and let them do theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Independent! and the thought process usually flows at around 2 in the morning! Ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like a little brainstorming but I spend a lot of time alone! Your dogs are beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like a little of both. I love alone time and sometimes feel best about my work (photography in particular) when I'm alone. However, there are times when I've seen myself grow the most when I've had to work with/for others.

Being a musician, it's THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD to collaborate. Can't play a symphony (or even a duet) without other people!

  38. There were so many provoking thoughts in Revolutionary Road. I do my best thinking alone but married to a guy who likes to talk his thoughts out loud. Certainly requires patience on my part! Lol

  39. I love that photo! Your pups are beautiful! I've always been a thinker and independent. Sometimes I plan and other times I have to just go with my instincts. I do like to get maybe two other opinions and that's about it. I do believe for most ideas to grow it takes a team, even if it's just a small team. :)

  40. Ah...thought provoking.

I think, when it comes to taking photos, solo is my best bet.
Others don't seem to appreciate me wandering off for a shot. But, I do enjoy having some company along the way...sometimes.

  41. It's funny just how much alike we are. I'm definitely a solitary soul and am the most creative when working on my own. Animals are always welcome though. Saying that I do get inspired by others but can never 'create' in others presence. That's partly why I don't go to any retreats or workshops because when put in that siutation I come up blank.

  42. Oh I'm totally like you. I love to take photos by myself. My favorite times are when I'm alone with the chickens or other animals and capturing moments on my camera. Inspiration flows and I feel confident in my abilities. If someone else is with me, I get self conscious and can't focus on what I'm trying to do. I definitely work better alone.

  43. Visiting from Cool Clicks...love my alone time! Here's my effort:http://lore-eleven.blogspot.com/2013/01/frosty-etchings.html

  44. I'm much more creative when I work alone. I put 100% of myself into what I am doing and I like to fully concentrate on the task, so any outside disturbance is a distraction and I lose my concentration. That is probably why I am self-employed, that and I don't like being told what to do! :)

    Nice photo!

  45. Am I just imagining things, or have you become quite contemplative (is that a word?) this winter? Alone is for me.....I've become somewhat reclusive in my retirement, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I could have written this post. I create better alone. I think it is because my writing, photography, scrapbooking, or crafting of any kind is my way of expressing and pouring myself out. It is me in the photo. It is me in the project. Since I'm introverted and guarded by nature, creativity is my outlet. Yes, much better alone. And unfortunately, I don't have enough alone time.

  47. Your dogs are gorgeous and I love their collars! :)
I like to work alone when I'm doing my baking for the Farmer's Market, drives me nuts if someone is trying to "help" or even in the kitchen! LOL!! I too hate, hate confrontation and will go out of my way to avoid it.

  48. What a great photo.. I definitely like to work alone. I do play well together with others but when it comes to creating it needs to be just me.

    Hugs~

  49. I am very much an introvert. I like to work alone.

  50. If it is the right person collaboration is so fun. Yet, I am not afraid to do something by myself. Either is fine.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love your photo! :) I love my alone time.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm more like you, Nancy - when creativity is involved, I feel more confident if I only have myself to consider.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Mostly I like to work alone. Once in awhile it's fun to work with someone else to get inspired but then go it alone.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I work best alone, especially at creative ventures, but I can work well with others, too, when necessary, and I'm more confident in my abilities now than when I was younger. I'm organized and a good leader (I know how to delegate!) but I'm not a power hog, and if there's someone who is, I'm happy to step back and let them take over.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My creative endeavors are solo. Sometimes I'll play around with artful things with the grandkids, but I don't really get into it like when I'm alone.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I like to brainstorm with others, but when it comes to actually DOING, I prefer solo.
