The Twinkie Defense.

Homemade Plum Jelly-filled Twinkies

I've always wondered about people that live to make a profit from others' misfortunes.

Specifically, this current Hostess situation and the demise of the Twinkie.

Due to the Hostess bankruptcy -- 18,500 hard-working Americans may lose their jobs this Thanksgiving week.  Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. Terrifying.

On the other, less saner side of the fence, there's a box of Twinkies on ebay right now with a current $5,000.00 bid.

Really?

Did Mr. or Ms. Soul-less ebay bidder ever consider taking that $5,000 and donating it to the Red Cross for the Sandy victims?

What will they do with those (10) $500.00 Twinkies?

Especially if the company and the workers are successful in mediating their differences and getting back to work. That would be sweet. But not for them.

Here's a suggestion. Take that overpriced box of Twinkies down to your local food pantry and donate them. Hey, with any luck, it might be a tax write-off.

Or, better yet, eat them yourself and choke on one.

Not fatally, but just enough to cause a few brain cells and what miniscule bits of humanity you possess to break loose.

It might be the best $5,000 you ever spent.

PS -- skip the frosting and fill with jam or jelly.

  1. Well said, Nancy.
The Hostess situation is a another case of blatant Vulture Capitalism. When an organization like Forbes Magazine supports the workers' position and puts the total blame on senior management you kind kind of have to assume that this type of union busting has gone too far.
As for the the entitled twit that would bid $5000 on a box of Twinkies you have to wonder how much of a dent this will make on his trust fund.

  2. I couldn't agree more!

What about a fund for the workers due to lose their jobs? $5,000.00 might allow some of them to, like, put real food on the table?

  3. 18,500 people losing their jobs, will effect much more than those workers. The families of those workers will suffer the job loss as well. Sad.

  5. That is absolutely revolting that people would stoop that low. And shame on the person who buys it.

  7. Bravo!!..

I cannot believe some a** would attempt to sell a twinkie box for that kind of money.

I'm hoping Hostess comes up with a way to stay. I heard they were still negotiating.... so that those folks involved can keep their jobs.

    ugh.

  8. Good post Nancy . . . The Twinkie ebay $5000.00 debacle certainly gives pause to "what is happening in our world.". This has received more media attention than what seriously is happening in our world . . .

  10. I just can't believe someone will pay that much. For twinkies. It makes me want to cry. Maybe the seller will donate some of the profits. You never know. People have kinder hearts this time of year.

  13. There are definitely some people in this world with a warped sense of what is the right thing to do.
I heard this morning that they couldn't reach an agreement and Hostess is going to liquidate. I had really hoped they would work things out so all those folks could keep their jobs...

  17. Great post, Nancy! I couldn't have said it better if I was in a bad mood!

I haven't even seen a twinkie since I moved here. They sell Little Debbie here and not Hostess.

  18. I apologize for not knowing all the facts - and right there I should keep my thoughts to myself. but what the heck. I hate to see anyone lose their job at any time; but, it sounds like the "poor workers" (visa-via their union representatives) are also responsible for their situation and can not be painted as the helpless victim. stock holders are invested to make money - by the very definition of capitalism ... it is just a shame that 'compromise' has become such a polarizing concept. I do hope that something comes through to save jobs. as for the person selling their box of twinkies on Ebay - good for them if someone is crazy enough to pay that. I see this as similar to selling your Michael Jackson paraphernalia following his death. Yes, you are taking advantage of a market created by the misfortune of another - but it is a concept integral to the creation of our nation - selling and buying and hopefully making money.

  21. The Twinkie debacle on ebay is disgusting and stupid. Our nation is devolving. People do need to make money though, so it's sadly somewhat understandable. I don't know enough details of Hostess' situation to form an opinion, but I wish all sides could come together to save jobs. I always hate to hear of folks losing their jobs, especially around the holidays.

  22. The highest box on Sunday was $250, but $5000, really?? People will take advantage of anything...

  24. That is totally insane! I can't imagine who would pay that much for a box of twinkies. But they do last forever, so I guess they're a good investment? haha

    The homemade ones look delicious!

  25. I don't know if that total includes all the 'labels' or not; but I know 300 people here are out of work when 61 year-old Holsum Bakery closed unexpectedly on Friday.

It's a rough time to be out of work for anyone.
