Although the Post Office says I live in Blair, Nebraska -- we are actually closer to and consider our farm part of, a small community in Washington County called Orum.
Surprisingly, or not, Orum is listed on the website, Ghosttowns.com, as follows:
"Town was a small farmers town that died out with the area after the 1970's. Now has just local farmers in area and church that still functions. Store was combo general store and gas station, but it was abandoned and then bought up for private residence."
We have met the family that owns the Orum General Store and they hunt on the land just adjacent to ours. They don't appear to be ghosts, but one never knows what form they may take.
Living in a ghost town is perfect in so many ways. Especially if you are hermit-like and don't appreciate
noise
neighbors
gawkers
traffic
society in general
We weren't aware of the ghost town moniker that Orum possessed when we moved here.
That's just icing on the cake.

I think it's sad that so many farm towns have died. I am glad I had the chance to grow up in such a small town, and I am glad it is still going strong.
ReplyDeleteI like the photos and I don't see ghosts. Maybe they're hiding?
Love the general store photo! and the story of your little "ghost" town. I have to say, as I've gotten older I like being closer to civilization, but the beauty and serenity of areas like yours is priceless.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos ~ and who knows ghosts could be! ~ too funny ~ (A Creative Harbor)

Lovely photos! My husband and I are major introverts :P so I think that living in/near a ghost town would suit us very well. I've never seen one but I love to look at old buildings.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots!
ReplyDeleteLove the photos- and I also love being out in the country. I used to live in a neighborhood, and I don't think I could ever go back to that. Pretty cool that you live in a ghost town!

ReplyDeletea nearby town that i showed the old weird abandoned store has a facebook page where they staunchly refute that the town is abandoned/dead. they keep saying people LIVE there, still. :)
AWESOME pix and facts!...:)JP
ReplyDeletethis time of year we get a lot of drive-by's...looking for deer. I live on a dead end road and it burns me up I have to share with folks who don't live here! yeah, that sounds mean but I'm sick and tired of finding dead deer some jackXXX has shot from the road.

How neat you live in a ghost town! I love the old general store. It reminds me of the store in the small town I grew up in. It's no longer there and most of the businesses are gone but there are still people living there.

My husband is committed to being a hermit ... I am not quite there yet, but the way things are going in this country, that's my next step. I love the idea of living in a ghost town ... spooky is fun up to a point (and not so much at night). Love the pictures and envy that you have so much space, peace and a few ghosts :)
ReplyDeleteAndrea @ From The Sol
Wow, my comment is a LONG way down.. you are loved by so many!! :-) I absolutely love that old general store shot... and your vintage treatment gives it a forlorn feeling to me... I like your idea of a co-host on your meme, would you mind if I tried that?? xo Thanks for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #47!

ReplyDeleteOrum sounds like my kind of place... guess I have a little hermit in me! Great photos.
ReplyDeleteLove your ghostly photos, Nancy! How far is it to shopping? (I couldn't get my act together for a Sunday Best this week...problems with PSE after I tried and failed at a tutorial in the latest issue of Elements.) Hope to see you on Thursday.

ReplyDeleteHow cool would it be to live in an old general store... that would be so neat to remodel & make it your own! =)
What a great history- you live in a ghost town! I love the photo of the general store
ReplyDelete!
i love that last shot! i remember my first trip to a ghost town, i was a kid and we went to calico ghost town. i was terrified thinking it was actual ghosts there! although while camping there, we did have a scary/ghosty thing happen. my little cousins and uncle were also camping with us, in their camper and in the middle of the night, my mom and i heard my youngest cousin aaron calling my name right under my window. we both jumped up and ran outside because we heard him plain as day but then he wasn't out there. we pounded on my uncle's camper to tell him aaron was outside and when my uncle opened the door, aaron was inside sound asleep....ohhhh it was a bit spooky!
ReplyDeletecool red barn! The horses are so pretty! Every time I visit NC I look for a general store...miss them. :)
ReplyDeleteThat handsome ... beautiful horses.
ReplyDeleteLove the look of the General Store.
ReplyDeleteI bet the even the ghosts are friendly in a small town.
ReplyDeletePeople pay a lot of money to go see a ghost town. you get it all for free.
