Rural Thursday #36: DIY Chalkboard Paint

I've been wanting to try this DIY Chalk Board Paint recipe for some time -- and this past weekend, I finally located some leftover grout from when we did a tiling project a few years ago.

I also had a few bottles of acrylic craft paint laying around and chose the color black for my first attempt, although you can use any kind of water-based paint for this project.

The recipe is really easy. You will need

Ingredients:

1 cup acrylic or latex paint (any color)

2 tablespoons non-sanded tile grout

Disposable cup

Sponge applicator

Directions:
  1. Mix 1 cup of paint and 2 Tablespoons of grout. Stir well until smooth.
  2. Using a sponge paintbrush, apply one thin coat to your object. Let dry one hour.
  3. Apply a second coat and let dry 24 hours.
  4. Once completely dry, prime the dry paint with some chalk dust.
  5. Then, write whatever you like onto the painted area.
Here are some ideas for using chalk board paint I've seen on the Interwebs, as well as thinking up myself:
  • Canning jar lids
  • Flower pots
  • Old cutting board (sand generously before painting)
  • Wine glasses
  • Small tray
  • Wooden door knob hanger
  • Picture frame glass (insert into frame when dry)
  • Old vases
  • Wooden lathe pieces cut to 12" -- plant markers
  • Bottom door panels in children's room
  • Storage totes
  • Empty shoe boxes
  • Halloween pumpkins
As you may notice, I opted to use a photo editor to demonstrate the writing on the chalk board areas, as the only chalk I had was too big and didn't work very well for me. I would suggest using regular-size chalk and not sidewalk chalk to write your text.

Do you have any other ideas to use chalk board paint?

I'd love to hear them.

  2. When my kids were little, I hadn't heard of chalkboard paint, so they had a regular chalkboard, which my granddaughter thoroughly enjoys. If I was raising kids again, I would do the entire back of their bedroom door, or, at least a half sheet of plywood, framed, and let them go after it!

  3. I was just thinking about this today! I made one a couple of years ago out of plywood in a cool old frame. I couldn't remember the recipe but there it is. I'll post a pic of mine tomorrow.

  4. What a cool idea. And it sounds easy to do. I can think of some projects I could do with chalkboard paint myself. Thanks for hostessing.

  20. or you could take the lazy route like me and imply purchase chalk board paint in a can!! I usually purchase pots at the end of the school year and let the kiddos paint the chalk board paint on the pots and plant some herbs for them! I love your paper flowers!

  23. cute, cute, cute nancy. they sell chalkboard paint, ready made...but your way somehow seems funer!!

i like flower pots, on the front porch. one for each number in your house number with the numbers written largely on the pot itself.

my house # is 561, so i would need 3 pots, one for each number, side by side. i've seen it and it looks really cute!! also peeps apply the paint directly to one kitchen cabinet to use as their daily menu!!

i adore a good crafty day!!

  24. Cool. I'd have to try really hard not to go overboard. What about a small area of a wall, say inside a kitchen? Or the inside of a cupboard door for like a grocery list? Mason jar lids (can't take credit for that one, saw it somewhere, probably Pinterest).

  29. I pinned it! I so want to try this.

In October I have my nephews many nights and am on a mission to find lots of crafts. I hope this will be one of them. Their brother is getting chemo. He has Trisomy 18. He was doing so good and then they found tumors on his kidneys. Every time I take the other boys in we try and have fun! Last time we popped a tent in the living room and had a camp out. Anything to get their minds off of the other stuff.

  53. I have chalkboard paint (in black) on an entire end wall of my (white) kitchen. Whenever we have dinner guests they 'sign in' (or doodle as fits their personality) I had seen the wine glass bases and picture glass on Pinterest and was going to buy paint but I LOVE this recipe!! Definitely trying it out next week!
