Somewhat rare to see nuthatch at the feeders in summer, as they usually feed on insects this time of year.
Wondering if the drought has impacted their feeding behavior and what it may tell us about the upcoming cooler seasons. I've also been seeing more jays and chickadees -- fairly unusual for August in Nebraska.
Are you observing a different variety of birds at your summer feeders?
Love ya,

Good Morning, Nancy. Love your photo today. I keep forgetting to mention how much I like your header, too.
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of mockingbirds and that's about it!
Hi Nancy I love these shots. I do not have a bird feeder set up but I have been noticing all the Canada Geese flying North. What the heck does that mean? Have a nice weekend. B
ReplyDeleteGreat captures Nancy! Love this little guy!
ReplyDeleteLove these shots. It always amazes me when I see them hanging upside down on the nearby trees.
ReplyDeleteAlways a fun bird to watch, they remind me of little clowns.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you photograph these fluffy little birds. why don't you sell worldwide at your Etsy shop? you have a client in Europe ;) xxo
ReplyDeleteGood Morning, Nancy!
ReplyDeleteVery cute pics of the sweet birds!
Hello Nancy.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures you show of Red-breasted Nuthatch (spætmejsen)
Wishing you a good weekend :)
Hanne Bente
You catched them very well. Wonderful photos !
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Sunday, Nancy. Best regards, Synnöve
these are sweet captures! they are constantly at my feeder. i use the fruit and nut seed mixtures. maybe they're coming for dessert.
ReplyDeleteand way to go on blogher! woohoo!!! :D
Very nice shots! It looks rather inquisitive. We don't keep feeders during the summer, but even last winter we didn't have any nuthatches. I haven't seen any in quite a long time.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous shots, Nancy. I would have thought they are blue jays..
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos! I was thinking the same thing about the birds this morning when I was watching a Nuthatch on the tree in my front yard. Like you, I've also seen Chickadees and Blue Jays and more birds that are common "winter birds".
ReplyDeleteI have all the usual suspects and the feeders are loaded!! I will be back tonight to link up!! I am gone for the day, not having fun!!
ReplyDeleteI had neglected the feeders this past week or so - too busy with other things! SO, no birds But they are all filled up again and the usual group are back in force!
ReplyDeletei have only seen nuthatches here a few times. guess we don't have enough pine trees to keep them happy.
ReplyDeletewe've had a flurry of young chickadees, cardinals, and painted buntings at the feeders the past few weeks. so cute.
my feeders are not nearby yours must afford a great deal of pleasure
ReplyDeleteGreat that you caught him at the feeder. Timing is everything! I saw my first butterfly at my new butterfly bush about 1/2 ago. Of course, I did not have my camera in hand!
ReplyDeleteThese are great close ups.
ReplyDeleteNuthatches are fairly common at feeders here. What's unusual is the sparsity of blue jays. Good to know where they went. ;-)
ReplyDeletehe seems to be so curious!
ReplyDeletegood shots, as always!

Your nuthatches are adorable. Great shots, Nancy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice surprise for you. Love these little guys though I've never seen one in person. Since I'm new to my area I don't know what's new and what isn't. Just the same ol' sparrows, jays, cardinals, chickadees, and hummers. Hope to see something else come migration time.
ReplyDeleteI love nuthatches and chickadees but all I seem to get at my feeders are sparrows. :0(
ReplyDeleteThe pigeons here are still the same, lol, but these birdies are such a pretty color, and a very intersting name. The earth is changing so much, and it truly is scary.
ReplyDeleteNothing interesting in my yard, same ol' doves, grackles, sparrows and mockingbirds.
ReplyDeletesuch pretty birds. :) I still have the usual around, blue jays, cardinals, doves and black birds.
ReplyDeleteThis city girl loves your pictures. Hope you're having a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteThese are great shots!! What a sweet little bird the Nuthatch is!! How interesting to also learn about their usual feeding habits too.
ReplyDeletegreat capture!
ReplyDeletewhere does the 'red breasted' come from?
your header is great!
What a marvelous bird this is, so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend! xo
Nuthatches are fun birds to watch;
ReplyDeletelove that first photo.
I think our Indiana birds are hiding out;
I can hear them, but don't see much of them.
Great pictures, Nancy. We usually have a lot of scrub jays here, but I have seen only one couple this year. Living here for a while now, I realize that the animal presence is cyclical. This is the year of the rabbits for us. Last time we had this many was in 2005.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of that! We occasionally see our robin's at the feeder and thought it very odd. I bet you're right tho b/c it's dry as a bone around here. :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty bird.
ReplyDeleteIs photos of food ok here or do I need to find another subject? :)
xo bj
Great pix...since this is our first year back, I'm not sure above feeder life, Nancy...:)JP
ReplyDeleteWhen I sit on my deck in the early evening, two Gray Jays arrive. I go and fetch a piece of stale bread to feed them. I can't have bird feeders because of attracting bes, but the Jays clean up the crumbs I drop in no time. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
ReplyDeletelove that little blue one. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up with NF Winged :)
Really great pics Nancy - I really love the first one. He is so cute!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of the sweet little bird! :)
ReplyDeleteI sure hope it's not an indication of what is to come for the winter...
Great shots! Years ago, when we lived a half mile from where we do now, I often saw nuthatches. I loved watching them walk upside-down on the tree trunk. Have never seen one since moving to where we live now, though.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of this cute little bird. We get the White-breasted Nuthatches here - I love the little sounds they make.
ReplyDeletePerfect timing for such great shot!
ReplyDeleteCheers on this Sunday morning, Nancy!
Wow! Gorgeous pics.
ReplyDeleteThose are fabulous captures! Looks cute.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful sunday Nancy :)
We have nuthatches at our peanut feeders all year. :)
ReplyDeleteHi! Beautiful bird photos. I can see some nuthatch birds around here. But I could not check where they took feed.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a wonderful Sunday.
we have twice rescued baby birds that fall out of their nests - not sure why this keep shappening
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I've seen a nuthatch....maybe they aren't found in this part of the country. I love upside-down birds, though! Oh, how I hope that this summer is a freak one, and not a sign of the new "normal."
ReplyDeleteI just don't know how you manage all these glorious close up bird captures - thanks for the pleasure of allowing us to look (and admire) them. Especially love that first shot.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are wonderful. I enjoy watching the birds so much. I have quite a variety of birds coming to my feeders. I am sure the drought and heat has effected the birds too with fewer crops and all.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Birds.
ReplyDeleteNice catch. I love.
ReplyDeletePD: I continue with my only camera.
I hope the drought hasn't affected the sweet birds too much!
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE him!! I think you have a white-breasted nuthatch though :)
ReplyDeletebetter late then never, he's a beauty!!
ReplyDeleteSo gorgeous. Great shots!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday to you!! I love seeing NutHatches, I haven't seen one in a long time.... well, since we moved to civilization. LOL I guess they don't like a lot of people around.
ReplyDeleteYour Nuthatch is lovely.. great captures.
ReplyDeleteThey are so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! So glad to be joining you this morning. LOVE your little birdy shots! Beautiful shots.
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy. What beautiful images of such a lovely bird.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting :)
I can say I'm not seeing the normal variety of insects out in the pasture this summer. Seems like there's nothing around but grasshoppers. Hope it isn't a sign of what winter will be like for all the wild animals.
ReplyDeleteActually, here in AZ, I saw a Western Tanager, a couple of weeks ago! Rare! And, even a little early for their early migration according to my AZ birding book. I was excited to see the beauty in person!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, Nancy. I think we get these guys up in our local mountains... they're fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteOH what a sweet little bird. I think I got some shot of one just like it while camping this weekend. I am the worst at knowing the names of birds.. LOVE your photos..
ReplyDeleteHugs~
we've had a lot feather friends taking shade on our porch lately, great capture Nancy!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful little bird, we have them here too, but seldom see one! Thank you for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #43!
