Another northern Washington County, Nebraska barn -- photo taken from the road as this farm is set back into the property a ways, as many of our farms are.
The farmers are getting their land ready for planting right now -- tilling and applying anhydrous ammonia for added nitrogen.
Sooner than later, the big tractors and planters will criss-cross the acres and acres of waiting and warming soil, depositing corn or soybeans for this year's crops.
May is a very busy time for our area farmers.

So pretty! The biggest farms I have seen are our potato farms in Northern Maine. Most of the farms around us are much smaller, it would be interesting to see all that equipment planting all those acres...

Even just a glimpse of a barn and I am transported to my childhood growing up in the country. How I miss those days and that life! This is a nice barn - good red!

ReplyDeleteI love the smell of freshly overturned earth ... and can remember as a kid walking behind my dad's plow and feeling the warm dark soil ooze between my toes.

ReplyDeleteFarmers are getting antsy here. Another 1.5 inches of rain over the weekend, at least they quit complaining about drought!! Pretty barn nice to see they covered the roof so it will last another 100 years!!

ReplyDeleteOur barns and fields are mixed with scattered housing. The best known farmer here produces organic vegetables in multiple fields he leases. He grows everything from field greens to beets. We have less of those warm weather crops, though I have even seen corn.
